What is Tai Chi & Philosophy?

Tai Chi is a centuries old Chinese discipline for health, relaxation, balance, flexibility, strength, meditation, self-defense and self-cultivation. It improves circulation, balance, coordination, and helps relax and strengthen the muscular and nervous systems. The stretching movements make the body limber, tone up muscles, and help release tension. As a meditation, Tai Chi is a way of harmonizing body and mind dynamically.

Great Grandmaster Cheng Man-ch'ing describes Tai Chi Chuan simply as "The "Supreme Utlimate" exercise for health, sport, and self-defense." When discussing the principles of Tai Chi Chuan, he says, "As a whiff, nothing is more pliable than air, nothing more yielding than water. But as tornadoes and tidal waves, air and water carry everything before them. Mass integration makes the difference."

Tai Chi Philosophy

The origins of Tai Chi go back over 5000 years and are based on Taoist philosophy. The main concept of Taoist philosophy is that the universe is going to change and we should not fight with it, but work with it. Action should always be effortless and come from creativity without mental or physical effort.

Taoism is about working within the laws of change and not opposing them, opposing change is seen as a waste of energy. Taoist philosophy states change is constant but, by understanding change and acting in accordance with the laws that govern it, we can work effortlessly to achieve our aims. Tai chi is about union of mind and body which makes movements into effortless interaction.

Yang Tai Chi Chuan

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese system of slowly flowing movements and shifts of balance that strengthens the legs while conditioning the tendons and ligaments of the ankles knees and hips, increasing their range of motion and making them more resilient and less prone to injury. Tai chi is a physical exercise that focuses on the mind while conditioning the body.

Tai Chi uses calming, flowing movement to help you feel less stressed and more relax in today's fast and pressured society. If you are stressed and over worked it can lead to a less healthy mind and body. By taking part in Tai chi you will experience better sleep, less stress, become calmer and more relaxed which will benefit your day to day life.

Professor Cheng Man-Ch'ing (1900-1975) stands out as a Yang style master of Tai Chi Chuan. Although he learned the long form (128 postures) in his mid twenties from Grandmaster Yang Chin-pu, the Professor shortened the form to 37 postures. In his foresight, the Professor thought that the Yang short form would be easier to learn and therefore more students would learn it. It proved to be very popular in the USA , when Professor Cheng came to the United States to teach Tai Chi. Later, it gained great acceptance all over the world.

In addition to being one of the greatest Tai Chi Grandmasters, Professor Cheng was an accomplished painter, poet, calligrapher, and Doctor of Chinese Medicine.
